December Visiting Teaching Message

What a wonderful message we have this month to share with our sisters. It is entitled, "An Extensive Sphere of Action."

Here are some excerpts from the message:

Elder M. Russell Ballard taught that "every sister in this Church who has made covenants with the Lord has a divine mandate to help save souls, to lead the women of the world, to strengthen the homes of zion, and to build the kingdom of God."

Participation in Relief Society enlarges our spheres of influence by giving each sister opportunities to build faith, to strengthen families and homes, and to provide service both at home and throughout the world.

Elder Ballard affirms: "Every sister who stands for truth and righteousness diminishes the influence of evil. Every sister who strengthens and protects her family is doing the work of God. Every sister who lives as a woman of God becomes a beacon for others to follow and plants seeds of righteous influence that will be harvested for decades to come."

Fast Sunday Lesson on the Spirit of Christ

Thanks Emillee for the wonderful lesson and to all those who shared their thoughts with us. Here is the video that was shown in the lesson.

Giving, not getting, brings to full bloom the Christmas spirit, said President Thomas S. Monson.

President Monson continues, "As we contemplate how we’re going to spend our money to buy gifts this holiday season, let us plan also for how we will spend our time in order to help bring the true spirit of Christmas into the lives of others.

The Savior gave freely to all, and His gifts were of value beyond measure. Throughout His ministry, He blessed the sick, restored sight to the blind, made the deaf to hear, and the halt and lame to walk. He gave cleanliness to the unclean. He restored breath to the lifeless. He gave hope to the despairing and bestowed light in the darkness.

He gave us His love, His service, and His life.

What is the spirit we feel at Christmastime? It is His spirit—the Spirit of Christ.

How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is giv’n!
So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heav’n.
No ear may hear his coming; but in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in.⁴

With the pure love of Christ, let us walk in His footsteps as we approach the season celebrating His birth. One of the most remarkable events in the history of the world happened on the road to Damascus. You know well the story of Saul, a young man who had “made havock of the church, entering into every house … [committing the Saints] to prison.” Saul was so hostile that many members of the early Church fled Jerusalem in the hope of escaping his anger.

Saul pursued them. But as he “came near Damascus … suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:

“And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?”

This transformative moment changed Saul forever. Indeed, it changed the world.

We know that manifestations such as this happen. In fact, we testify that a similar divine experience happened in 1820 to a boy named Joseph Smith. It is our clear and certain testimony that the heavens are open again and that God speaks to His prophets and apostles. God hears and answers the prayers of His children.

Nevertheless, there are some who feel that unless they have an experience similar to Saul’s or Joseph Smith’s, they cannot believe. They stand at the waters of baptism but do not enter. They wait at the threshold of testimony but cannot bring themselves to acknowledge the truth. Instead of taking small steps of faith on the path of discipleship, they want some dramatic event to compel them to believe.

Humanitarian News:
Our humanitarian efforts are being concentrated on current needs of the church at this time. The Spring Fling Saturday will be in early March. We have a goal of 300 Hygiene Kits. We will need soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. They can be turned into the basket on Sunday or to Mary Munns or Dee Anna Rees. We are looking for other projects as well. If you have suggestions, please share. We will purchase towels and other items for the kits in December with funds that have been donated, so those are welcome as well. Our next work meeting will be in January. If you have old sheets that you don't need anymore, we can use them. Thanks for all your help. If you have questions, please contact Dee Anna Rees at 356-3534 or Mary Munns at 356-3353.

Trunk or Treat

Come join us for Lyman 1st wards annual Trunk or Treat, this Saturday the 29th of October, time 6:00 p.m. at the church parking lot. Bring your kids, costumes, and candy, it will be a ghoulish good time!!!

Service Opportunity

Monica Hobley's daughter will be moving into our ward and is in need of some help. She will be cleaning her house on Tuesday (October 25th) at 9 a.m. She needs all the help we can give her. Many hands make for fast work. The more that come and help the faster we can get things done and the more blessings we will receive. I am not sure of the exact address, but it is across the street from South Fork and south a bit. It is an older white home with red trim.

Alta Peterson's 90th Birthday

Alta Peterson is turning 90 on October 27th - If you would like to wish her a Happy Birthday and have a piece of cake stop by her house anytime that afternoon, she would love to see you.

Alta Hillman Peterson was born in Sunnydell on October 27th, 1921. The house is still there. She had one brother and one sister. Her brother has passed away, but her sister is living in Alpine Utah with her husband Hyrum Andrus. (Google him and you will see about some of the books he has written). During 7th grade her family moved to Fillmore Utah for a short time and then moved back to Lyman. The home that Ingrid Blomquist lives in was their home. Alta has lived in a few houses in our area: Deanna Wilson's home, Blake and Danielle Munns home, and a little log cabin that is still standing next to Pat and Brian Sharp's home.

Farming was a way of life for Alta. She grew up on a farm and continued to farm after she was married. The Great Depression didn't affect her family because they lived off their land and were always able to provide for their family. Her children say that she doesn't know how to spend money. She likes to hoard it. There is nothing wrong with that.

Alta went to school in Sunnydell and Rexburg. She married Dewain Peterson one year after high school. They spent most of their married life in the Lyman area. Dewain came from a family of 10 kids and was responsible for the farm after his father passed away.

Alta and Dewain had 5 children. Larry is the oldest and lives in Centerville Utah. Deanna lives in Moab. Carla passed away 2 years ago this January. Holly lives in Modesto California. Dan (Bishop) lives here in Lyman. Alta has 20 grandchildren (17 living) and 17 great grandchildren. Four of her children served missions and all of them graduated from Ricks College.

Alta loved to quilt, sew, crochet and embroider. If you want to see some pretty flowers, just stop by. Her flower gardens are beautiful. She loves to be outside working in the garden. During the winter she heads to California to be with her daughter Holly and loves to work outside at her house as well.

In January of 1985 Dewain passed away. Alta has been busy for the past 27 years serving in the church and traveling. She has been to Mt. Rushmore, Hawaii, and also went to the Holy Land. Her trip to the holy land was with Eunice Layton back in 1983. While her son Larry lived in Delaware she would go visit and travel up to New York and the Sacred Grove. She has served in every organization in the church. She has been a Relief Society President twice. Genealogy was a great passion for her. She spent atleast 18 years working in the genealogical libraries. In 1986 (one year after Dewain passed away) she served a proselyting LDS mission to Jackson Mississippi. Most of her companions were younger, but her last was around the same age and came from a similar background as her. She also served in Louisiana and Arkansas.

We hope Alta has a wonderful 90th birthday. She has been an active member and it is always a joy to see her on Sunday. We are so happy she is recovering from her fall last year that broke her hip and a few ribs. We will miss her this winter while she is in a warmer climate.

I'll go where He wants me to go

Well, Kinsey is safely ensconced in the Missionary Training Center as of yesterday. What a joyful experience. Understanding that "joy" means love, tears, happiness, hugs, and more tears. Paul and I are just so thrilled that Kinsey has chosen to serve. She was well prepared and only a little nervous. She will be at the MTC for 8 weeks to learn Spanish with an Italian twist, and then go down to Argentina. Hopefully she will get be in Buenos Aires for Christmas.

I was so touched by Joe & Jordi Lawless' special musical number in Church on Sunday. Remember how they beautifully sang, "I'll go where you want me to go." I recall how many times I've said, "I'm not going there-" or in conversation with one of my children, "we're not going there." That meaning of the phrase is, "I'm unwilling to consider whatever you're talking about. " But I realized during the hymn the Lawless' sang, that when I say to the Lord, "I'll go where you want me to go," I am committing myself to follow wherever He leads me.

Now I was lucky. I got called to serve in the Australia Brisbane Mission, the most beautiful mission in the world. (Sorry, Kinsey.) I mean, who wouldn't want to serve their mission in paradise, looking down on the Great Barrier Reef? So I wasn't dumb, and when the Lord called me to paradise, I said yes. I'll go where you want me to go.

But life nowadays is a little different. School mornings are not paradisiacal in nature. Sometimes children disagree that homework should come before texting, facebooking, and computer games. Sometimes they have alternate opinions about the number of times an article of clothing should be worn before washing.

These are times that I'm not as convinced that I want to go where the Lord needs me to go. But that is where the Lord helps me. Not to a mountain height, but to a calm, patient conversation with my children. Not over an exotic sea, but just helping me bite my lip instead of speaking ill.

Keeping the Spirit in my home for the rest of my life is where the Lord wants me to go now. Seeking for the true in heart in Buenos Aires is where the Lord wants Kinsey to go right now. I know He'll help us both.

Congratulations Dallin and Clarissa Draney

Dallin and Clarissa had a healthy baby girl, Annley Jane Draney, yesterday at 5:48 a.m. Both mom and baby are doing great. Length = 21 inches, Weight = 7lbs 15oz.

Fast Sunday Lesson on Gratitude

A grateful heart is a beginning of greatness. It is an expression of humility. It is a foundation for the development of such virtues as prayer, faith, courage, contentment, happiness, love, and well-being. But there is a truism associated with all types of human strength: “Use it or lose it.” When not used, muscles weaken, skills deteriorate, and faith disappears. (Pres. James E. Faust)

It is difficult to even imagine a resentful person who is grateful or a grateful person who is resentful. President Gordon B. Hinckley has said:

“Absence of gratitude is the mark of the narrow, uneducated mind. It bespeaks a lack of knowledge and the ignorance of self-sufficiency. It expresses itself in ugly egotism and frequently in wanton mischief. …

“Where there is appreciation, there is courtesy, there is concern for the rights and property of others. Without it there is arrogance and evil” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1964, 117).

So often it is too easy to become wrapped up in what is negative instead of counting the numerous blessings which the Lord has provided for us. President Monson in an article titled "An Attitude of Gratitude" says of this:

"We can lift ourselves, and others as well, when we refuse to remain in the realm of negative thought and cultivate within our hearts an attitude of gratitude. If ingratitude be numbered among the serious sins, then gratitude takes its place among the noblest of virtues."

I have felt the blessings of peace as I have focused on the things that I am grateful for rather than the things that I am lacking or the trials I am in.

Remember the story of the Scarecrow by Cynthia Rylant and how he was grateful the little things.
A scarecrow is always WATCHING, always doing his job with a smile

- A scarecrow has a job to do and doesn’t complain about it no matter what the weather. He is thankful that he has an important job to do and that he is good at it.

- A scarecrow does his work silently and is a gentle reminder to birds to find food somewhere else. His gentleness shows he is serving with love and thankfulness.

- A scarecrow can watch the miracle of big plants growing from tiny seeds, clouds rolling by, rain falling, wind blowing ripples through the leaves and grass, witness a caterpillar transform into a butterfly, and can see the sun set and rise again. He is thankful for the creations of nature and the outdoors.

- A scarecrow can get wobbly on its post and may even fall over but can be readjusted and never lose his smile. He is thankful someone would notice that he needed their help.

Like this scarecrow we should be THANKFUL for our situation in life and have a happy heart. He cannot express it with words but we can.
