Here are some details about the hike we will be going on. We will meet at the church at 8 am. Be sure to bring a lunch.
Hike Length Roundtrip: 5.2 miles roundtrip
Elevation gain: 1,800 feet
Highest Point Elevation: 8,940 feet
Trailhead GPS Ref: Long 44.4 Lat. -111.1
Level of Difficulty: Medium
Restriction: None
An interesting cave by Darby Canyon is the major draw to this popular
west slope hike, closely followed by intermittent waterfalls splashing
down the canyon rim along with impressive displays of wildflowers. The
Wind Cave snakes through the Darby Formation, a thick layer of 350
million year-old dolomite. The trailhead is located about 20 minutes
just outside the town of Driggs. It is very easy to miss the turnoff
from Highway 33. The turn off is south of the Spud Theater. As you drive up
Darby Canyon, you must continue past the Girls Camp.
Beautiful scenery, a pleasant hike and a rewarding cave all describe
the short hike to the Wind Cave in Darby Canyon. With a hike of about
3.5 miles each way and only a thousand foot elevation gain, the Wind
Cave can be done in just a little over two hours. But once you arrive,
you may spend hours crawling through the wind cave, which goes from
hundreds of feet high at the entrance to merely a crawlspace farther in.
For the more adventurous, an ice cave is only another mile away, but to
enter this you must have technical ice climbing knowledge. Also around
this area are many cliffs and boulders for the rock climber. If you go
on this hike, a flashlight for the cave is a definite must.

Hike to Aldous Lake
What a great hike we had yesterday to Aldous Lake. Thanks to all who came. It was a beautiful day and everyone had fun. No bears and no fish - but the kids had fun chasing and catching huge Toads.
Our next hike will be to the Wind Caves up by Victor Idaho. We will be going on Tuesday, July 17th. I will post more details about this hike later.
Thanks Jared for getting a picture with ALL of us. I am impressed with your picture taking ability.
These guys out hiked us all. They continued on and hiked to Hancock Lake. Great job to Sam, Chelsea, Jared, Jackson, Orion, AND Emillee (she took the picture).

Aldous and Hancock lakes
are located in the Centennial Mountains, north of Kilgore, Idaho, at the base
of the continental divide. The trail passes through shady woods and flower
strewn meadows. At times it passes nearby Ching Creek cascading down the
mountain. While the trail is generally easy, it is up hill most of the way.
|
|
Directions.
The drive to the trail head is a beautiful, but not direct. From Rexburg go north on the Salem highway passing the St. Anthony Sand dunes heading to Kilgore. Along the way you will see sign indicating you are on the Fort Henry Scenic byway. As you approach Kilgore, this byway will intersect with the Lost Gold Scenic Trail. Eventually the road will turn to the east heading to Island Park. There will be a turn off to Kilgore. At Kilgore, you will come to a T intersection. Turn left to the west at the Sign for Ching creek. After half mile, turn right heading north at the sign for Cottonwood creek. Continue to follow the road to Cotton wood creek where the road forks to Camas creek. All future sign will indicate the directions to Aldous Lake. Stay on road 26. You will eventually turn onto road 27. The road terminates at the trail head. |
|
Description of The
Trail.
The trail is shaded by tall trees. In the early summer there are wild flowers everywhere. Small bridges provide easy access across streams and marshy areas. After initially traversing level ground the trail begins to climb. While the incline is not steep it is constant. The trail passes above Ching creek which provides the sound of falling water. After 1.3 miles you will arrive at Aldous Lake. A trail circles the blue green lake. There are several camping areas on the west and north shores of the lake. From the north camping area the trail continues for another mile up the hill to Hancock lake. Hancock lake empties during the summer. |
